On December 2, 2001 , Fiorentina-Piacenza was played at the Franchi. La Viola take the kick-off, but Hubner presses, the Tuscans lose the ball and it falls to the right side of the area, where Poggi slips off the market, and with his right foot, not even his foot, scores under the crossbar. Only 8 seconds have passed since the kick-off, and that was the fastest ever goal in Serie A.
The record lasted almost two decades, but on 20 December 2020 Rafael Leão of AC Milan, found the net after only 6.76 seconds against Sassuolo.
"The fastest goal in Serie A was a record that made me proud for 19 years", explains Poggi, "and that I enjoyed for many years."
"At the same time, especially recently, given the evolution of football, it was desirable that someone would get there and take it off me. Otherwise it would have been a problem (laughs)." Said Paolo Poggi to Goal.com
