"Mattia Caldara returns to Milan": the future of the Bergamo defender born in 1994, currently on loan from the Rossoneri to Atalanta, has been clearly revealed by his agent, Guiseppe Riso. As previously reported by Calciomercato.com, the Nerazzurri will not redeem the central defender, due to his poor physical reliability ever since returning to Bergamo.
Multiple injuries have kept him away from the fields, for almost two years, affecting both the physical and psychological aspects of Caldara, who suddenly passed from being a shining promise of Italian football to a 26-year-old who struggles to play football continuously. Not even his return to Bergamo, his home, helped the defender recover his form shown in the 2016-17 season.
According to technical and economic evaluations made by Atalanta: the redemption of his card, set at 15 million, "is not worth the candle", neither from a financial nor a technical point of view. This is obviously a big problem for Maldini and Milan, which sees the 15 million guaranteed by the redemption of Mattia vanish. It is reported as well that AC Milan´s head coach Stefano Pioli will not count on Caldara for next season, so Milan will have to sell him but at a totally reduced price, or try to regenerate him further, with the big risk that his valuation can drop even more. Caldara has another two-year contract with Milan, worth 4 million gross a year. Most likely we will end up seeing the 26-year-old leave somewhere else as Milan has no intention to keep such an inconsistent player with such a high salary.
