Alessio Romagnoli's contract with AC Milan is due to expire at the end of the current season. The Rossoneri directors would like to keep him as a solid centre-back is always needed, even when he is not the starter, with Fikayo Tomori and Simon Kjaer being the first choices of coach Stefano Pioli.
The player's agent, Mino Raiola, met yesterday with the club directors to start the renewal negotiations. The well-known representative even said yesterday that Romagnoli 'wants and can stay'.
The current issue, however, is that the former AS Roma defender earns currently around 6 million euros net per season which is way too much for the AC Milan management. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, however, the Italian central defender is willing to almost halve his salary: from 6 million euros to 3.5 million.
A definitive agreement was not found yesterday in the meeting between the parties, reports the source, but it was positive. Romagnoli's will is to renew with AC Milan despite losing his starting spot within Pioli's team. The alternative for the defender, in case of non-renewal, would be a move to the Premier League.
