Gerry Cardinale, who is the founder of now-owners of AC Milan, RedBird, has visisted the Sesto San Giovanni a few days ago to take stock of the option of building a new stadium elsewhere other than the San Siro area.
The mayor of Sesto San Giovanni, Roberto Di Stefano, granted an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport and said the following:
"He wants to build the new stadium here."
"Because there are no critical issues. Because the costs would be lower. Because the first stone could be laid within 18 months, while at San Siro I don't know... These are areas that have already been demolished and almost completely reclaimed. In other words, there is nothing to pull down, the surface is already available. Furthermore, being a private area, there would be no need for a public debate."
The mayor added:
"I made it clear that Sesto is to be considered a metropolitan area in Milan, on which the largest abandoned areas in Europe are being regenerated. From here, with a fifteen minute subway ride, you are in the Duomo or Linate (airport)."
On the visit of Gerry Cardinale, the mayor added:
"It was positive and we will meet again. You have viewed the area, together with the technicians of MilanoSesto (who owns the area, ed) and of Milan. He wanted to understand the potential of the area, the services, which they are now analyzing. I realize that there are many variables: we are available, now the ball passes to the clubs who will have to evaluate the times, costs and certainty of investments. In their place I would have already decided."
