Paolo Maldini renewed his contract with AC Milan but the negotiations were too long as the technical area director had important terms and conditions.
As per the well-known Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport in today's edition, the director wanted a role with more freedom and autonomy.
Instead, in the new deal, he will have a budget made available to him and he will have some more freedom in the mercato but within the parameters and guidelines set by the Milan owners and higher management. The club, on the other hand, has retained the typical prerogatives: giving the green light or not on strategic choices such as the signing of a manager, a purchase or sale of some players etc.
As for the CEO role, Ivan Gazidis will remain in his position. But, his contract expires in November and Giorgio Furlani (who is Elliott portfolio manager in Italy) could replace him once the contract of the South African expires. Paolo Maldini, for his part, reiterated that he no longer wants to see a new 'Rangnick case' who at the time was contacted without his consent. The club said yes to this choice but still confirmed the power over the final choices.
As for the salary of the technical area director, it should be 2 million euros net per season. The are prizes in the contract which include the Scudetto victory and the Champions League. More important than the money, however, is the relationship that Maldini has established with Gerry Cardinale, the new owner, always present in the negotiations with his lawyers.
