As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport in today's print edition, the renewal of Rafael Leao continues to be one the most important topics at Casa Milan, given how important he is to the team. Chelsea have tried to sign him and are aiming to try again.
Next weeks will be important to understand the future as Milan continue to try to protect their interest as they definitely want to keep the player on a new deal. Regarding the salary request, Rafael Leao are willing to offer 7 million euros net per season. But, Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara are offering a little less: around 6 million euros.
The big issue in these negotiations, however, is still the compensation that should be paid to Portuguese club Sporting. Rafael Leao will have to pay 19 million euros to his former team for the unilateral contract termination in 2018. Initially, it seemed that this sum should be divided between Lille, AC Milan and the player, but now Rafa is asking that the two clubs, in particular the Rossoneri, take charge of the payment. This is the key to unlocking the renewal and a big effort is required from the Italian champions to keep Rafael Leao.
