FC Barcelona's president, Joan Laporta, intervened during the general assembly of Barcelona to approve the 2021/22 budget and to vote in favor of the budget for the 2022/23 season. Among the topics talked about, there was the situation of the Super League project. Here are his words:
"The financial situation of the football clubs is very worrying, because we bear all the costs and all the risks. This meant that most of the clubs in the Spanish league had to sell a significant part of their rights for half a century. We were invited to do so, but we thought we could do better, with operations in the interest of the club."
Laporta added:
"One of the mistakes of the previous Board was trying to compete with the financial rhythms of foreign clubs, which do not have this control mechanism and do not respect Fair Play. This means that clubs like ours must choose whether to have a squad without difficulty, or the stars to compete and compromise the club's economy. UEFA should regulate this thing. We support the Super League, which will provide solutions, it will be an equal competition, without benefits only for a few and without disruption of the club-state (PSG or City). We must be the clubs that choose their own destiny."
Laporta concluded:
"It will be an open League, based on meritocracy and always respecting the national leagues. It is something that is awaiting approval in Luxembourg, and when it has the green light we can start working without pressure to propose a format that everyone likes. Soon there will be news."
