The defender may soon have another chance to display his skills. He could feature again, maybe not as a starter but while the match is in progress instead.
The German defender's father was a goalkeeper. The talented player played a lot in midfield until Norbert Elgert, great soul of Schalke's youth sector, coach of the Under 19 team, called him and said: "Malick, you will be a defender with me". This too was spot on, like the choice to focus on Leroy Sané, Mesut Özil, Manuel Neuer. From his previous experiences, Thiaw still has the sensitivity for scoring: in Elgert's Under 19 team, in one season, he was the top scorer of the team with 8 goals.
