Rafael Leao's contract is still an issue for the AC Milan club directors. The plan of the club directors is to keep him by extending his current deal. However, negotiations are proving to be harder than initially thought. Besides, the matter of the compensation to Lisbon makes the affair trickier.
On October 11th, before kick-off against Chelsea, Paolo Maldini spoke to SportMediaset and entrusted them with these words:
"Leao renewal? We would like to do it before the World Cup. Indeed, we wanted to do it a year ago and six months ago. Then there must be the conditions to do it. The idea is to do it before the World Cup break. We’ll see what happens."
According to Il Corriere dello Sport, it seems unlikely that Paolo Maldini will achieve his goal of renewing the Portuguese player's deal before the World Cup break. The dispute that must be solved with Sporting Lisbon makes it almost impossible to find an agreement in the next 12 days.
