In an official statement, Sporting Lisbon announced that they have received from Lille "compensation amounting to €19,670,443.70" as a settlement for the unilateral termination of the contract by Rafael Leao in 2018. This contractual termination allowed Leao to join the French club on a free transfer that same summer, where he stayed for a year before moving to AC Milan. The amount of compensation awarded to Sporting was determined by the Arbitral Court of Sport in Lisbon.
"It is also specified that the payment of €19,670,443.70 corresponds to the principal sum of €16,500,000.00, plus interest and legal costs. Furthermore, the decision of the Arbitral Court of Sport (Lisbon) which condemned the player Rafael Leao to pay Sporting SAD the amount of €16,500,000.00, plus interest, as compensation for the unilateral termination of the contract without just cause, and the decision already reviewed by the Court of Appeal of Lisbon, Supreme Court of Justice, and Constitutional Court, is not subject to any further appeal or claim, thus becoming final and unappealable."
"Finally, the FIFA decision that condemns LOSC Lille to pay Sporting SAD, jointly with the player Rafael Leao, the amount of €16,500,000.00, plus interest, as compensation for the unilateral termination of the contract without just cause, resulted from two separate and consolidated appeals before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Lausanne), in which, respectively, among others, LOSC Lille requests the revocation of the decision, and Sporting SAD requests the condemnation of LOSC Lille to pay compensation in the minimum amount of €45,292,516.00."
