Against Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan managed to obtain one point after a 0-0 result in Signal Iduna Park stadium. A decent result, especially considering that the Bundesliga club has not lost at home in Europe for two years now. Yet, after yesterday's Champions League match, the Rossoneri leave with many regrets and a sense of incompleteness.
AC Milan missed some important goal scoring chances
As pointed out by Il Corriere dello Sport, Milan could have won yesterday, but the finishing was not there in front of goal. This was a bit like what happened against Newcastle. The result is zero goals scored in 180 minutes, despite many chances created over the course of the two matches and still a demonstration of superiority over the opponent. Yet, the points in the group standings are now two, when they could have been six. Meanwhile, Newcastle United win convincingly against Paris Saint-Germain with a 4-1 result.
Despite Milan's summer transfer market being set up to make the team dangerous on all fronts, to build a lethal team even on the right flank, yesterday Pioli's team, much like in their debut in this Champions League, created the majority of dangers from the left. The Leao-Theo axis, when ignited, always proved dangerous and especially in the second half, it initiated almost all dangerous actions.
Yet, as they say in these cases, they missed that extra bit to seal the deal. Both Giroud and Pulisic, as well as Chukwueze, squandered three major opportunities to take the lead, and the AC Milan team of Stefano Pioli was left empty-handed. Even though Dortmund, except for some imprecision in Milan's first-half exits, didn't become particularly offensive: the Germans' real opportunities, in the first half, all came from long-range shots.
The next two matches are against PSG, first away and then at San Siro; Milan will have to secure qualification there.
