The Milan team did their duty last night by beating Newcastle, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to secure qualification for the Champions League round of 16 because in the other match of the group, Borussia Dortmund and PSG drew, granting the second spot to the French team.
The Rossoneri are therefore eliminated from the top European club competition. However, yesterday's success still allows the team, known as Diavolo, to remain in Europe and participate in the Europa League's second phase.
This morning's report in La Gazzetta dello Sport explains that Milan accomplished half a miracle, but fate wasn't entirely in their hands as the other match's draw ultimately favored PSG. It's a real shame because last night, the Rossoneri secured a comeback victory thanks to great team spirit and sacrifice: trailing by a goal and after a rather disappointing first half, the Milan team came back against Newcastle in the second half, with goals from Pulisic and Chukwueze.
Stefano Pioli's substitutions were decisive, receiving excellent responses from those who entered the game, such as Jovic, Okafor, and, notably, Chukwueze.
There is satisfaction within the Rossoneri camp for staying in Europe, but undoubtedly, there are significant regrets for failing to secure a spot in the Champions League round of 16. As Pioli stated in the post-match interview, the biggest regret is undoubtedly the first-leg match against Newcastle at San Siro when despite 25 shots and numerous goal-scoring opportunities, they only managed a 0-0 draw.
The past is past now, however; they must look forward. Milan now needs to aim to win the Europa League. While it's not the Champions League, it's still a prestigious trophy that Diavolo has never won in its long history.
