The Italian newspaper, Tuttosport, today took stock of Milan's new stadium project in the San Donato.
Even the regulatory prescriptions of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), regarding major sporting events, risk complicating the realisation of the new facility. This is one of the points raised in the public debate organised in the council chamber of the municipality on the outskirts of Milan.
Attached to the request for urban planning variation for the San Francesco area, chosen by Milan to build its new facility, is also the CONI regulation on parking. These rules stipulate that for "large events" (with 70 thousand spectators and above), there must be at least 12,896 parking spaces. This is much more than the estimates presented by Milan to the municipality of San Donato to initiate the bureaucratic process, which talk about 3,500 or 4,500 underground parking spaces plus 750 on the surface in the adjacent area. The newspaper reports the words of Mayor Francesco Squeri on the matter.
"Other places could be created in the space between the Rogoredo and San Donato stations. The approach of those who address the issue entrenched in fundamentalist positions that make any form of confrontation difficult. If the necessary rail mobility is not developed, we are willing to vote against. It is not certain that Parco Sud will give its consent. The project could change significantly."
Among Milan's ideas would also be the use of parking lots in the fifth and sixth buildings of Eni, the oil giant company. Not very easy fits, especially during midweek matches with employees at work.
