After another season without trophies for Milan will try to rebuild, at least as far as the technical leadership is concerned. Stefano Pioli, after 14 days in which he suffered elimination in the Europa League quarterfinals at the hands of Roma and a humiliating defeat (the sixth consecutive in a derby) against Inter, seems to have reached the end of his Rossoneri experience. The club has already started working to find his successor.
As Tuttosport writes this morning, Giorgio Furlani's words about Stefano Pioli after the derby were merely formalities. Regarding the coach's position on the Rossoneri bench, the Rossoneri CEO spoke to DAZN microphones: "The Milan coach is Stefano Pioli, I confirm this. We are focused on finishing the season well."
With five games left and only the second place to preserve, along with a recognition for the coach himself, Pioli will be left in place until the end of the season. Clearly, in the meantime, work will be done in the offices of Casa Milan to find the most suitable replacement as soon as possible.
Gerry Cardinale will also play an active role in the search, having the final say on the decision, as Furlani always said after the Inter match:
"Regarding how we work on the sports side, the people reporting to Gerry Cardinale are Moncada, Ibrahimovic, and myself. These are the people who report to Gerry, with him always making the final decision."
In the past week, there have been many names circulating around Milan. From the coming days onwards, the objective of the Rossoneri management team will be to try to narrow down the field as much as possible.
In this sense, one of the most considered candidates remains Julen Lopetegui: there have been contacts, but the fanbase is not convinced. Furthermore, he is also a candidate for the West Ham bench. Other profiles that are intriguing include Sergio Conceiçao from Porto, although the president has made significant statements about his future, but also former Rossoneri player Mark Van Bommel, now at Antwerp.
The Dutchman would fit well with the idea of a 4-3-3 formation. Marco Rose from RB Leipzig is also on the list. However, there wouldn't be the name of Antonio Conte, one of the most called upon and dreamed of by Rossoneri fans, but wouldn't align with the intentions of the management, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic. This week, as mentioned, efforts will be made to narrow down the shortlist as much as possible.
