Peppe Di Stefano, speaking on Sky Sport Italia, commented on Milan's current situation, as they are still searching for a new coach:
"It's a period of deep reflection. The choice of the new coach cannot be wrong because they have to replace a coach who, despite all the criticisms received, has achieved great results in these 4 and a half years: in addition to improving many players, Pioli has brought Milan back to the Champions League, won a Serie A title, and reached the Champions League semi-finals. There have also been negative aspects such as losing six derby matches in a row, but I believe that the balance leans more towards the positives than the negatives."
The journalist continued to talk about Milan's situation:
"If Milan has decided to make a change, they cannot afford to make a wrong choice: a coach who does not seek to improve this Milan both in terms of results and style of play. Reflections have been ongoing for months, contacts with some coaches, especially Lopetegui, have been going on for a long time. Moncada has spoken with several coaches, and the one who had progressed the most steps was precisely Lopetegui. The Spaniard was considered by the Milan club as a somewhat normal choice and precisely for this reason, it has been somewhat downplayed by the public, the environment, and the protests of the fans. On Sunday against Genoa, the organised fanbase could either protest or remain silent because they want clarity from the club about what Milan will be."
Still on Milan's choice for the future coach, he said:
"The choice of the coach is not just a technical one but global because it is the first time that Cardinale, Ibrahimovic, Furlani, and Moncada are choosing. It won't be an easy decision. The ideas will have to coincide. The names are the usual ones: I believe that Lopetegui has almost definitively faded away, we keep Fonseca high, we keep De Zerbi even though there have been no contacts between the parties yet. Then pay attention to the outsiders: there is talk, for example, of Van Bommel, who is still very close to Ibrahimovic. Also talk of Thiago Motta, who is closer to Juventus than Milan. If other names emerge from the Milan executives' hat, we will see. It will be a very intense month between the field and especially the coach market."
