In an article by Filippo Maria Ricci, correspondent in Spain for La Gazzetta dello Sport, there is talk about Julen Lopetegui's reaction to the resounding protests from AC Milan fans upon hearing about his (former) significant candidacy for the Milan bench:

Lopetegui observes, reads, and listens. He struggles to understand what is happening. Or what has happened. The personal as well as technical backlash against him was a low blow he did not expect: it's not that he didn't see it coming, he just hadn't considered it at all. The protest from the Rossoneri world has surprised him, and the manner and form of it have struck him. Initially, Julen was convinced that everything would settle down, but now the Spanish coach is somehow adapting to the new reality.
The sense of this whole situation, from the club's offer to the rejection by the fans, escapes him. The personal attacks leave him bewildered, he had never experienced such a reality.
The latest rumours suggest a slowdown on the track leading to the former Real Madrid boss and a new push for the candidacies of Paulo Fonseca, Roberto De Zerbi, and Mark Van Bommel.
