Mauro Tassotti, former Milan player and long-time assistant coach (especially during the Ancelotti years), made some statements to La Gazzetta dello Sport about Milan's transfer market and what the team should focus on to try to win. His words:
"Milan needs a deeper squad, with reinforcements in all departments. I think Fonseca will find a strong team, equipped to do well, and I would start by not selling any of the big players. It's true that the Rossoneri have been far from first place in terms of points for two years, but it's also true that Napoli and Inter have done something extraordinary; the last two seasons have been really special. And Milan, in the one just finished, still came second."
Tassotti on the transfer market ideas:
"Fonseca's optimism, who has informed the Rossoneri's management that he already considers the current Milan squad very competitive, can be understood for two reasons. First, the transfer market alone cannot solve everything. And here we come to the second point: a coach's ideas can greatly help a club. That said, some problems need to be solved. I’m thinking of the many goals conceded last season: Fonseca will need to quickly understand how to improve the reliability of the defence, and help from the market can facilitate this task. Then it will be necessary to expand the discussion because, as I repeat, the market is not a magic wand: Milan in recent years has defended in a certain way, more man-to-man and less zonal, and has also done well because that's how they won a championship."
