Paulo Fonseca's work on the AC Milan bench is not that of a simple stabiliser in tactical schemes. The Portuguese coach, as Tuttosport points out, was chosen by the Rossoneri management also for his ability to enhance players. Milan needs to rediscover its champions: from Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez, and Rafael Leao to the less utilized secondary players.
If they are not part of the outgoing market, the three pillars from Stefano Pioli's era can return to have a significant impact. The ongoing issue of contract renewals for the French players needs to be addressed, while Leao needs to adopt a new mindset: with his overall potential, he can be a consistent player, scoring 20 goals a year.
The defence needs to be reworked, and in this area, Fonseca is a true master: his Lille was one of the best teams in Europe in terms of the fewest shots conceded. Malick Thiaw, Pierre Kalulu, and Fikayo Tomori, three leaders who have been lost along the way, should benefit from this.
Looking at the 2023 market, given the quality of Yunus Musah, Noah Okafor, and Samuel Chukwueze, there will be potential to improve even the less impactful signings like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tijjani Reijnders, and Christian Pulisic.
