Winning without a true top-class striker up front? Ask Fabio Capello, who managed to win the Champions League with only Massaro leading the attack.
These were his words to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed via Milan News:
"How do you win without a number 9? With teamwork. If the center forward doesn’t score much, it’s important that he participates in the play, that he moves towards the action to create spaces for his teammates. In this case, if you have offensive wingers close to him who are good at scoring or midfielders capable of making runs, you can make up for the absence of a top striker."
Capello continued:
"In 1994, I had Massaro, who wasn’t a center forward but a right winger. He was good at shooting on goal and creating spaces. Additionally, we had many players skilled at dribbling or making runs and finishing. When you have a dynamic squad, compensating for a gap up front becomes easier."
