Paulo Fonseca, Milan's coach, commented on the 1-3 defeat against Liverpool at the San Siro. Here's what he said to Sky Sport Italia:
"We played against Liverpool, which is a great team. We started the game well, but they had a counterattack opportunity and scored two goals from set-pieces that changed the game and disrupted our mental balance. In these kinds of matches, it's the details that make the difference, and you can't afford to make mistakes. I think Liverpool is a more cohesive team than we are, and they showed that. We need to work to be more consistent. After conceding the second goal, the team never really played, and it's difficult like that."
On defending set-pieces, Fonseca said:
"For the first goal, we had man-to-man marking on Van Dijk and the other center-back. We had prepared for the game by assigning individual marking to their two central defenders."
Why was Rafael Leao not given the ball more often?
"It was something we prepared with the limited time we had. We planned to exploit the right channel to serve Leao with a long pass and put him in a position to take advantage of one-on-one situations."
Why not use Tijjani Reijnders and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as number 8 in the midfield?
"I respect all opinions. But I think we can work with different structures. I'm looking for the best characteristics for our midfielders. I don't think Reijnders is a player to play close to Fofana, and I like the structure with two midfielders. That's how we created the most dangerous situations."
