Matteo Gabbia is no longer a temporary solution for AC Milan. After his winning goal in the derby, he has swept away all the doubts around him. It is no coincidence that a significant contract issue has now arisen, as per La Gazzetta dello Sport on their website.
The Italian defender's last contract renewal with the Rossoneri club took place two years ago. As things stand, the 24-year-old Italian's deal runs until the summer of 2026. His salary, though, is quite low compared to his teammates.
As per the source, his base wage is set at less than 1 million euros - just 800 thousand euros net per season plus bonuses.
To give perspective, all his fellow defenders earn at least twice as much, if not significantly more. Thanks to the "Decreto Crescita" (Growth Decree), Fikayo Tomori earns 3.5 million net, Malick Thiaw makes 1.7 million euros, and the new arrival Strahinja Pavlovic starts at 2 million euros without tax breaks.
Gabbia's rise started thanks to a brief loan spell at Villarreal
This rise reflects the strong will of a player who, a year ago around this time, had gone to Spain with the goal of securing a starting spot at Villarreal. Even there, the journey was uphill due to a severe head injury sustained by teammate Albiol. Then, in January, everything changed.
Fikayo Tomori suffered a serious injury, and Milan didn't know how to solve the problem. Stefano Pioli called him back, and Gabbia answered the call, with his usual dedication to the cause. To motivate him, the Rossoneri management granted him a financial compensation because in La Liga, he had negotiated a salary of 1.5 million euros net per season which is more than his salary at Milan.
