Oliver Bierhoff, former AC Milan forward, commented on the team’s Champions League defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport:
"I didn’t mind Milan. Especially in the second half. In the end, I think a draw would have been fairer. At least a draw... Xabi Alonso's team won the Bundesliga last season by a large margin and drew against Bayern in Munich on Saturday. It's understandable to face difficulties when up against a more experienced team that dominates possession and has quality players."
Bierhoff added:
"In the first half, Milan was a bit too cautious and fearful. They should have exploited the counterattack more because there was space available. Even though they had to maintain a lower midfield due to the opponents' pressing and ball movement, I believe there was a chance to create more danger. What does Fonseca’s team lack? A bit of creativity and ideas in attack."
He continued:
"My Milan was a team of champions that won and entertained with its play. This is a different group, but certainly organised and has a playing philosophy that was evident in the second half against Bayer."
