Daniel Maldini, former AC Milan forward now at Monza, spoke today at a press conference from the Italian national team's training camp.
What has this experience been like for you and your family? Is this call-up a victory for you?
"It's always nice to be called up here. My family has always supported me. We didn't talk much about the call-up itself, more about other things as we usually do."
Did memories of your father and grandfather come to mind? Is it true that Venezuela wanted to call you up?
"Yes, I was contacted, but I always preferred to wait for the right moment and the right choice for me. I think it was worth it. I didn’t talk much with my dad, but I know he's happy, and everyone is happy. That's what matters."
There are photos of your father and grandfather here. How did it feel to see them? Could you return to Milan in the future? Daniel Maldini replied:
"It feels great to enter here and see photos of my father and grandfather. I’m focused on my time here. I take it day by day. I'm not thinking about a return to Milan right now. Anything is possible, but I’m focused on doing well, and we'll see at the end of the year."
How did you create your own identity as Daniel Maldini?
"With time, you start to understand things, like how other people's opinions can be positive or negative, but you have to stay on your own path. Time helps you understand a lot of things."
When you were a child, did you already aim to play for the national team? Do you remember anything you talked about with your grandfather Cesare Maldini regarding Italy?
"It's normal for every boy who plays football to dream of reaching the national team. I remember few things with my grandfather. I know he was always close to us, but too many years have passed to remember specific moments."
What is your role? Who do you thank for getting here?
"The people who have always supported me. If you achieve certain goals, it's thanks to them too. As for my position, I'm fine with playing anywhere in attack, maybe as an attacking midfielder, but also as a winger or second striker. It really doesn’t matter much to me."
Which player do you look up to? Have you asked your father for advice on how to beat defenders?
"As a player, Kaká is the one I liked the most. I haven’t asked my dad for any advice on how to get past defenders."
Which player on the field has impressed you the most? Daniel Maldini answered:
"In this league, I think Dybala has impressed me the most. The ease with which he does things is incredible."
