While European leagues and the players' union are up in arms with FIFA over an overly congested calendar, the Super League promoters aren't giving up and are ready to move forward.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, sources from A22 (the company promoting the new competition) have indicated September 2025 as the start date.
The participating teams remain a mystery, as the project is currently only backed by Real Madrid and Barcelona, while Juventus has tried to step back and rejoined the ECA.
Meanwhile, CEO Berndt Reichart has revealed the format:
"The matches should be organised in such a way that there is true balanced competition and that they matter as much as possible. For this reason, we are proposing a classic league format with home and away matches, followed by playoffs."
Reichart explained in an interview with the German outlet Kicker the current status of the project:
"At the moment, we are primarily focusing on technological partnerships and the business model that stems from it, as we are firmly convinced that fans deserve a more affordable and enhanced experience in front of the screens."
The A22 CEO is calling for collaboration from clubs and players.
"From the beginning, we have focused on dialogue. Now, the stakeholders involved can contribute and take responsibility for creating a new and more modern football system for the future. In our view, clubs and players should especially be the ones to determine important governance issues."
He also took a jab at the new Champions League format:
"Now, everyone can ask themselves: have UEFA’s goals been achieved? Are the group stage matches more attractive and decisive? I don’t think so; in my opinion, there are more matches without real consequences for the tournament’s outcome."
