The Portuguese head coach of AC Milan, Paulo Fonseca, spoke to Sky Sport Italia ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Red Star at San Siro:

“We have a great opportunity tomorrow, but we must focus only on tomorrow’s match, which will be difficult. After that, we’ll think about the last two games and the possibility of finishing among the top eight. But for now, let’s concentrate only on tomorrow.”

Have you spoken with Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

“We always talk about everything, and we’ve been in touch as usual over the past few days. We spoke with our usual honesty.”

Do you feel more comfortable in Europe?

“They’re different kinds of games. I believe the team is increasingly capable of performing in the league the way we do in Europe. We’ve improved both in attack and defense. In the Champions League, the games are more open, and there’s more space. This could be an advantage for Loftus-Cheek tomorrow.”

You seem more cheerful than a few days ago… Fonseca replied:

“I try to always remain balanced. It’s a heated moment, but I always aim to respect everyone. That’s just how I am; I try to stay calm and respectful.”

Is it a delicate moment for Milan?

“Those who have worn this shirt the longest are important right now. We all want to be part of this club’s history. These players can pass on certain values to others.”

How far is Milan from the team you envision?

“We haven’t been very consistent, but we’ve played some good matches, not just in the Champions League. Even in the last match, we did some things well. If we look at the results, we’re disappointed. But if I look at the growth process, I’m happy and confident.”

What kind of match will it be tomorrow?

“Champions League matches are different; players are more motivated, attentive, and focused. The team needs to understand the moment and how important it is to win tomorrow. I look at the team and how the players work.”

Do you have any advice for Atalanta on how to beat Real Madrid? Fonseca commented:

“Gasperini is a great coach; he already knows what to do. We play in a completely different way from Atalanta. I’m sure it will be very difficult for Real to play against this Atalanta. I wish them the best of luck, as well as the other Italian teams competing in Europe.”
