Interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, former coach and national team manager Fabio Capello spoke about Milan's transfer market activity, focusing on Santiago Gimenez and the impending arrival of a player of Kyle Walker's caliber in Italy. Walker, with Manchester City, has won every possible club-level trophy.

Some have concerns about his age: Walker will turn 35 in May.

"No, I disagree. I believe Kyle has the physical integrity to dominate in Italy for at least a couple of years. We saw it at the Euros and earlier in the Champions League. Just look at the recovery he made against Vinicius in the last clash between City and Real Madrid, only a few months ago. Against Vinicius, no less."

You knew him at 21 years old. What convinced you to call him up for England?

"First of all, his speed, a quality he has retained over time. Back then, he was still playing for Tottenham, a promising youngster who only needed to work on his defensive discipline. And I think he managed to do that exceptionally well as he matured."

So, is Milan adding a champion?

"I’d confidently say yes. Walker is a full-back who knows how to push forward and, most importantly, possesses quality in managing the ball in the final third. When he’s in the attacking third, he doesn’t get flustered and has the ability to make decisive plays. On top of that, he brings the experience and leadership of someone who has played and won at the highest levels. I don’t think Guardiola would make just anyone captain of a team capable of winning the Champions League."

Even though he hasn’t avoided making headlines in gossip magazines...

"Matters of the heart and personal issues are none of my business. Let’s instead emphasize Kyle’s professionalism, both on and off the pitch. Again, you don’t stay at the top for years unless you’re focused physically and mentally. Especially in a demanding role like his."

By the way, do you see Walker performing well as a central defender?

"He has the maturity, personality, and athleticism to do it in emergency situations. But if you sign an exceptional full-back, I think it’s better to use him in the position where he has consistently proven to be one of the best in the world, right?"

Conceição has recently criticized his Milan for lacking hunger and mental consistency. Can the Englishman help with that? Capello replied:

"Certainly. Walker is the kind of player who carries weight in the locker room and inspires others, partly because he has the status to do so. How many at Milan have won 18 trophies? None... And if Fonseca before and now Conceição point out mental gaps in the Rossoneri, I don’t think they’re talking nonsense. Adding a leader and a winner can help make that mental leap."

Milan should also make some moves in attack. Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord, Joao Felix from Chelsea are being mentioned...

"To be honest, I don’t know the Mexican striker well enough to give an informed opinion. Joao Felix, on the other hand, was a real prospect, but even at Atletico Madrid, he didn’t live up to expectations. He has talent and skill, but the doubts are about his consistency. However, Conceição has known him very well for years... But beyond the transfer market, Milan needs to work on the group it already has."

Capello, Was the Supercoppa victory just an illusion, or can Conceição still salvage the season?

"I have great respect for Conceição. In fact, he would have been my choice last summer. He’s a coach with the right characteristics. However, he needs time; he’s only just arrived."
