Interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, former Udinese head coach, Andrea Sottil and father of AC Milan's new player, Riccardo, spoke about his son. Here's what he had to say:
"He has always been obsessed with Sheva, Kaká, Pato, and Ibra. The last day of the transfer window was adrenaline-filled. It was a thrilling day, full of suspense, and everything was decided in the final hour. At 12:30, Giuseppe Riso called me to talk about this opportunity, telling me that the negotiation wouldn't be easy. I stayed silent, I didn’t tell anyone. Then at 2 PM, Ricky called me, and from that moment on, it was frantic hours. We wanted the transfer to go through, and in the end, we celebrated with a toast."

Why Milan?
"Because we’re talking about one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. Milan has always been Riccardo’s team since he was a child, without any specific reason. I’ve always had a soft spot for Torino. But he was always drawn to the Milan of Shevchenko, Pato, Kaká, and Ibrahimović. Not only that, but joining Milan at 25 is also an important step forward in terms of technical, personal, and motivational growth. Wearing the Rossoneri colors gives you motivation in every possible way."
What role can he have from now until the end of the season?
"Ricky has always been aware of the competition he would face. That’s how it is in big teams. But for him, it’s an amazing challenge because he gets to play with great champions in an environment of daily improvement. As a father and a coach, I can only be proud of him. When you walk into Milanello and see the trophy cabinet on display, you need to quickly adapt to the reality of the club. It requires a mental switch, but I’m sure he’ll manage to do it."
How did he take not being included in the Champions League squad?
"He was very disappointed. But these are club decisions that must be respected. Of course, he would have been thrilled to be on the list and play in a competition with such incredible prestige."
How is he getting along with Sergio Conceição?
"He told me he’s a relentless coach and a very direct person. Training sessions are extremely intense. I’m happy that he’s being coached by someone like Sergio, who was a great player in the same position as Ricky. This can only help him improve."
What are Riccardo Sottil’s qualities?
"He has everything to win over the coach and the club. His best quality is undoubtedly his one-on-one ability at high speed. He has great acceleration from a standstill and impressive changes of pace. In recent years, he has also improved his finishing, which is crucial for a winger. He can play both on the left and right, and I’m convinced he will score many goals and provide several assists. Additionally, he has improved his ability to attack the goal."
The No. 99 jersey has been worn by Gianluigi Donnarumma, Antonio Cassano, and Ronaldo the Phenomenon...
"Yes, I know. It’s a big tradition."
What did Florence mean to him? Riccardo Sottil's father commented:
"It was his home since he arrived at 16. He was given a lot, and he gave just as much back to the Viola colors. I personally want to thank President Commisso and director Pradè, who made sure the deal with Milan went through. I also want to thank the Fiorentina fans, who have always cared for Riccardo despite some difficult moments. That’s football—it’s made up of situations. A great opportunity came along, and we took it."
