Interviewed this morning by La Gazzetta dello Sport, former Napoli and Inter coach, among others, Rafael Benitez spoke about the most pressing topics concerning Italian teams competing in Europe, also focusing on Milan after their heavy defeat in Rotterdam against Feyenoord.

The situation is serious and could become even worse for Atalanta, Juventus, and Milan...

"You need to stay optimistic without losing realism. Juventus starts with a minimal but useful advantage; they can control the game and have the right players for it. They have found goals from Kolo Muani, recovered Vlahovic, and have a distinct personality. Meanwhile, Milan and Atalanta will have the chance to play at home in the return leg, in front of their fans. They will feel their support and know how to use it."

One goal to defend for Juventus, two to score for Milan and Atalanta. Benitez replied:

"In these situations, you have to make the most of your organization and maintain balance, which is crucial. It’s dangerous to go overboard in either phase. These are clear concepts for those with international experience, and all three Italian teams have that."

Mike Maignan made a mistake for Milan:

"He’s historically one of the most consistent performers. This confirms what I always say—football can sometimes be deceptive. It was an accident, nothing more to add or dwell on endlessly. It’s done. It’s over. Time to move on."

How?

"Tactical and technical approaches are chosen by the coaches who have full control of the situation. From the outside, I can imagine that these kinds of matches must be dictated by the players with the most personality, leadership, and talent."

Milan is waiting for Rafael Leao moments of brilliance... Benitez answered:

"He’s the player who can turn the game around and resolve it even in the darkest moments. He’s done it before, and he can do it again—it’s in his skillset. This is the perfect moment to reaffirm his strength. Because if not now, then never—the Champions League won’t give you second chances, and failure is not an option. But a game of this magnitude, with such immense stakes, cannot rely on just one player, no matter how brilliant. Milan needs to rise through a collective effort. The transfer market has brought in reinforcements that have improved certain areas and raised the overall level of the squad."
