“There is a lot of work to do, there is no other way. We must have a warm heart and a cool head.”
With these words, Sergio Conceição introduced himself to Milan on December 30th.
The Portuguese coach signed a contract until June 2026, which includes a clause: Milan can unilaterally decide to terminate the agreement at the end of the season. Not ideal for giving the coach contractual strength within the locker room, where such dynamics often make a difference. Conceição, along with his five-member staff, has an agreement worth one million euros until June 30, 2025. If the relationship continues, his salary will increase to 3.5 million euros.
Sergio Conceição's adventure at Milan has so far been a whirlwind of contrasting emotions.
The unexpected joy of winning the Italian Super Cup, the fans immediately elevating him to an undisputed idol, followed by a steep decline with multiple positions lost in the league standings and a shocking elimination from the Champions League. Additionally, there have been internal tensions, such as the Calabria incident, which almost led to an on-field scuffle, and issues regarding the club’s spokesperson. These factors have led to a break with the Rossoneri club: a departure in June seems inevitable, barring any extraordinary turn of events.
A future in the Premier League?
Ambition has always been the driving force behind Sergio Conceição, both as a player and now as a coach—combined with a deep love and passion for football. He remained unemployed for six months because he is not one to accept the first challenge that comes his way; he needs strong motivations. Last summer, he turned down Marseille because he wanted a project with specific guarantees for winning. Now, his agent, Jorge Mendes, is already working on his professional future, with contacts established with several Premier League clubs. Sergio Conceição could start anew in England. But first, he will try to win the Coppa Italia to leave with two trophies in his cabinet.
