AC Milan is one of the most prestigious teams in the history of football, with a trophy cabinet that demonstrates its greatness both nationally and internationally. The Italian league bears Milan’s indelible mark, with as many as 19 championships won. We can say without a doubt that Milan has secured its place among the giants of Serie A.

Beyond being one of the strongest teams in Italy, Milan has also established itself internationally. It has won a series of European and world competitions that have made the club famous worldwide.
In this article, we retrace some of Milan's most important achievements and analyze the history of the team in all its splendor.

History of AC Milan: From the Beginning

Associazione Calcio Milan is one of the most well-known and iconic clubs in the international football scene. It was founded on December 16, 1899, by a group of passionate English and Italian enthusiasts. The club’s original name was “Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club,” and its purpose was to spread football and cricket in Milan.

From the very beginning, the club became one of the most decorated teams in the Italian scene, and the red-and-black crest began to gain fame in the football sector. Milan boasts an impressive trophy cabinet, having won numerous Italian and international titles.

In fact, we are talking about one of the most victorious football teams in the history of European football—19 Serie A championships, 7 Champions League titles, and many other trophies!

Club Management and Brand Strengthening

The club has evolved significantly over the years. The club is under the control of the American company RedBird Capital Partners, led by Gerry Cardinale.

The club's management is focused on growth and internationalization. The organization pays great attention to commercial development in Asia and the strengthening of the global brand.

Milan’s National and International Successes

The Rossoneri club has won a vast number of titles, not only nationally but also internationally. In the Italian league, it has won the championship an impressive 19 times. It has also won the Coppa Italia 5 times and the Supercoppa Italiana 7 times.

Regarding international successes, the club has won the UEFA Champions League 7 times, the Cup Winners' Cup 2 times, the Latin Cup 2 times, and the UEFA Super Cup 5 times. It has set nearly all Italian records at the international level.

But that's not all! Milan also boasts world-level triumphs with 3 Intercontinental Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup in 2007. These successes have helped make Milan one of the strongest teams not only in Italy but worldwide.

The Champions League Victory in the 2006-2007 Season

Milan won the Champions League in the 2006-2007 season in the final against Liverpool. What can we say? It was their revenge after the defeat two years earlier in Istanbul. The final was played on May 23, 2007, in Athens at the Spyros Louis Olympic Stadium, in front of almost 64,000 spectators.

The match was not particularly hard-fought, there were not many goal-scoring chances, but there were many moments of great tension. The first goal came towards the end of the first half, thanks to a free kick from Andrea Pirlo that was deflected into the net by Filippo Inzaghi. Overall, Milan controlled the game very well and left Liverpool little space to create chances.

In the 82nd minute, Inzaghi once again managed to get past goalkeeper Pepe Reina and put the team up 2-0. That was exactly the kind of football everyone needed. The game seemed all but decided, and the tension started to ease.

Liverpool found the strength to counterattack and made it 2-1 in the 89th minute, thanks to a goal by Dirk Kuyt. In the last minutes of the match, Liverpool was giving it everything to equalize, but Milan held strong.

When German referee Herbert Fandel blew the final whistle three times, The Rossoneri club was able to celebrate its seventh Champions League victory. Thanks to this success, Carlo Ancelotti was ranked as one of the best coaches in Milan’s history, and Filippo Inzaghi was declared the undisputed hero of the night.

The 2007 FIFA Club World Cup Victory

Milan’s victory against Boca Juniors in the final of the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup was one of the matches that made history for the red-and-black team. The match was played in Yokohama on December 16, 2007, and Milan triumphed 4-2.

The star of the match was once again Filippo Inzaghi, who scored twice, in the 21st and 71st minutes. The other two goals were scored by Alessandro Nesta in the 50th minute and Kaká in the 61st minute.

Boca Juniors defended well and scored two goals thanks to Rodrigo Palacio in the 23rd minute and Pablo Ledesma in the 85th minute. However, there was nothing they could do—Milan proved to be more determined and well-organized. They had everything needed to take home the victory.

The Irreplaceable Role of Kaká

Milan’s victory earned the club worldwide respect. Besides Inzaghi, who scored two goals, the other standout player was Kaká. Kaká shone throughout the competition that year and was undoubtedly the most creative player on the team.

That same year, in 2007, Kaká won the Ballon d’Or. The victory against Boca Juniors put Milan on top of the world. Italian football reaffirmed itself as competitive and deserving of reaching the world’s highest level.

With this victory, Milan added another prestigious trophy to its collection—perhaps one of the most important—and left an indelible mark on the history of the competition.

There are so many other players who shaped Milan’s history and wrote pages in the history books of this great club. Now, it is time to rebuild and aim for trophies again.
