Between present and future: Milan are playing for a season finale full of meaning, with a Coppa Italia final to be played against Bologna (which could prove decisive for qualification to a future continental cup, the Europa League in this case), and a future that must begin to be planned with meticulous attention. And regarding what will become of the Milan side of 2025/26, the Rossoneri management is moving along two very precise tracks: the search for a sporting director and a coach who will be tasked with lifting the fortunes of a club that risks finishing ninth in the league.

Sergio Conceicao...

In the meantime, Sergio is reviving his ambitions of sitting on the Rossoneri bench in the near future thanks to the possibility of achieving an objective that has been missing from the club since as far back as 2007/08: winning two trophies in a single season. Back then, in the Milan coached by Carlo Ancelotti, it was the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. In this case, after winning the Italian Super Cup, the Milanese side are playing for a big piece of their season in the Coppa Italia final. If they add the sixth domestic trophy in the club’s history to the cabinet, Conceicao (aside from the league) will have done the most he could to stay at Milan—even though a farewell seems increasingly likely, no matter how the season ends. Every decision will be made at the end of the season, together with the person who will be appointed sporting director.

Milan on the hunt

In any case, the direction that Milan have taken for some time now is that of opening a new chapter, a new era together with an Italian coach—if possible—who knows the Serie A league inside out. It must be a coach who is on familiar terms with winning. With an important résumé, experienced, and who has as his sole goal success both domestically and internationally. Among the profiles noted down by the Milanese working group and CEO Giorgio Furlani, various names have been explored as candidates: Massimiliano Allegri, Antonio Conte, Gian Piero Gasperini, Carlo Ancelotti, Vincenzo Italiano, Roberto De Zerbi, and finally also Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri still in play...

In particular, in recent times, the former coach of Juventus, Napoli, and Chelsea is among the profiles to be strongly considered for Milan 2025/2026. Free after his most recent experience—which ended with a surprise resignation in March 2024—on the Lazio bench, Sarri is someone who knows how to win: the Scudetto with the Bianconeri, the Europa League with the London Blues. Sarri, previously targeted by the Rossoneri before Paulo Fonseca’s departure and Sergio Conceicao’s arrival, and also on the radar of Fiorentina and Atalanta in case of parting ways with, respectively, Palladino and Gasperini, is waiting for the right call to relaunch himself at the highest level.

What better opportunity than a club that absolutely must start over and aim high like Milan?

The Neapolitan coach is a live option, but the final decision will come once the sporting director is appointed and CEO Furlani has resolved all doubts. From that moment, Milan will run full speed toward the future, a future that could begin again with Maurizio Sarri.
