The casting for the role of sporting director at Milan has a new favorite: Lee Congerton, a Welsh executive born in 1973 who is currently at Al-Ahli. La Gazzetta dello Sport names the former Atalanta director and scout as the leading candidate for this important position within the Rossoneri's management structure, as he reportedly fits the European profile and has the experience the ownership is looking for in the person to whom this role will be entrusted.
In his career, however, Congerton has been more of a scout than a sporting director, yet he has pulled off some major deals. During his three-year stint as technical director at Hamburg (2011–2014), he was the one who advocated for the signing of a young Hakan Calhanoglu from a third-division German club.
Hakan Calhanoglu would go on to become a key player first for Milan, then for Inter, as well as for the Turkish national team. But it was at Atalanta that Congerton pulled off true masterstrokes. After working as head of scouting at Leicester, the Welshman led the Lookman deal in the summer of 2022, and also played a key role in the signings of Ederson and Hojlund. The Danish striker's card was then sold after just one season to United for a 50 million euros profit.
