Part of the San Siro stadium area must be decontaminated due to the presence of hydrocarbons and heavy metals.
On April 30, the final day for the “Public Notice for Expressions of Interest”, the Municipality of Milan communicated this to the Metropolitan City.
But who will have to cover these costs? Palazzo Marino (the city government), or Milan and Inter — the two clubs interested in purchasing the Meazza and the surrounding areas?

Here’s what Corriere della Sera Milan edition wrote about the matter:
“The general legal principle is that the party responsible for past pollution (if it can be identified), or otherwise the current owner of the area, must pay for the decontamination. Therefore, if Milan and Inter, in their future contract with the Municipality, do not agree to contribute to the decontamination costs — either partially or in full — the burden, whether minor or significant, will fall on the Municipality. Moreover, the size of the decontamination cost, depending on whether it is charged to the clubs or the Municipality, is set to become an additional factor in evaluating whether the sale price of €72 million is fair.”
