The new Milan wants to start over with a more solid defense compared to the one that conceded 43 goals (in Serie A alone) in the recently concluded season. Massimiliano Allegri is a coach who never neglects the defensive phase, a long-standing strength of his teams and a key to his many career victories.
Naturally, this goal can only be realistically achieved by strengthening a backline that is likely to lose both Malick Thiaw and Theo Hernandez in the upcoming transfer window. Milan's new sporting director, Igli Tare, is reportedly ready to act accordingly, with two replacement targets already identified to reinforce Allegri’s defense.

This morning, La Gazzetta dello Sport headlined:
"Gila liked for the center. Udogie the idea for the left."
Lazio’s central defender and Tottenham’s left-back are said to be two of Milan’s main targets to reinforce their defense. Mario Gila, a Spanish defender born in 2000, joined Lazio in 2022 after a stint at Real Madrid and currently has a market value of €30 million. He is under contract with the Roman club until 2027. Destiny Udogie, a 2002-born Italian international and former Udinese player, is under contract with Tottenham until 2030. Prising him away from Spurs would be a major task, with a fee of no less than €40 million expected.
Milan could afford these two targets (in addition to a deep-lying playmaker, another priority) by selling Tijjani Reijnders for €75–80 million, Theo Hernandez for €35 million, and Malick Thiaw for €15–20 million.
