Alexis Saelemaekers is one of the surprises of Milan’s start to the season. The winger has earned a starting spot and is impressing with his performances and fighting spirit. Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri spoke about him in an exclusive interview with MilanNews.it.
Were you surprised by his impact this season?
"I admit I’m a bit surprised. The player has fantastic talent, but he had never shown all of this in his previous experiences in Italy. I’m surprised because I had never seen him like this, with such drive. He wants to prove a lot, you can sense on the pitch that he’s looking for payback."
How has Saelemaekers changed compared to last year?
"I think he has changed a lot mentally and physically, and there’s also a question of leadership. He has shown personality, in these first games he has done very well. He has gained more experience, I didn’t think he could reach such an important level."

Was there a turning point in his career up to now?
"Claudio Ranieri did a very important job with him, and Alexis also found himself at the right moment with a coach who brought out his qualities. Ranieri nurtured his talent at the right time."
Has Milan always wanted to keep him?
"Allegri has always trusted him, and from the start there was a good relationship between the two. Saelemaekers immediately showed a lot, repaying that trust. There is healthy competition in that position on the pitch, but now he is playing as the best in that role," explained Tavolieri to Milan News.
What about Saelemaekers' future?
"Milan has trusted him, and now this is his moment. Saelemaekers has managed to seize it and is taking a step forward in his career. He wants to stay at Milan, he is both a player and a fan, he feels part of the project, part of the team. In Milan he is very happy, he loves the city and that is important."
