Center forward or second striker, but also free to move to the left when needed...

That’s how Allegri sees Rafael Leao.
Since the start of the season, many have wondered why the Portuguese plays as a center forward when his comfort zone is on the left wing. The Milan coach explained it in a press conference:

"Leao can play as both a first and second striker. He can also play wide in the area where he feels most comfortable. He has important qualities and can play with anyone."
That phrase, "can play with anyone," makes things clear. Milan’s system is built on pairings that will almost always feature Leao alongside another forward depending on the opponent. We could see a Leao-Pulisic or Leao-Nkunku duo, offering few points of reference for defenders. But above all, the Leao-Gimenez pairing seems the most natural. As seen in the last half hour against Fiorentina, it gives Leao more freedom and less pressure.
After scoring twice on Sunday, Leao’s new league must begin now. Allegri trusts him, his teammates do too, and he has plenty of space on the pitch. Now it’s up to him to confirm it. Next challenge is Alberto Gilardino's Pisa side.
