A form and impact that have exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. Luka Modric, with all his endless class, has immediately established himself as a leader in Massimiliano Allegri’s Milan. The coach never gives up on the Croatian midfielder’s quality, intelligence, and refined football. The numbers say it all: 11 league matches out of 11 as a starter, with one goal and two assists, for a total of 965 minutes played out of 990 available.

Only 25 minutes missed in Serie A, 16 against Cremonese and 9 at the end against Udinese. It is already possible to start talking about a future that might still be colored in red and black, though the final decision will rest with Modric himself.

When sporting director Igli Tare secured Modric’s signature during the blitz in Zagreb, few expected to even consider a long-term project. His contract runs until June 30, 2026, and his ID card says age 40. The final decision on a possible extension will arrive in the spring. That is when Modric will reveal his intentions to Milan and to the football world. He is also thinking about the World Cup next summer, a tournament he wants to play with his national team.

What does the decision depend on?

According to Matteo Moretto, in one of the latest videos on Fabrizio Romano’s Italian YouTube channel, Modric’s decision will also depend on his family, which is settling in well in Milan, and on how carefully his workload is managed during matches and throughout the week. This will also involve how he handles his energy in upcoming games with the Croatian national team.

Milan and Modric's renewal option

The optional year in his contract, which could extend it until 2027, is entirely up to Modric, writes Calcio Mercato. The player himself asked to have full control over the decision at the end of the season. More will be known by next spring about his plans. Modric remains focused on Milan, but Moretto notes that several clubs from Qatar and the Saudi Pro League have already made contact and are showing interest in the former Real Madrid midfielder.
