The day after Milan’s second defeat of the season, the picture is clear. After the slip in the league opener against Cremonese in August and a long run of positive results, Allegri’s side fell to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico and bowed out of the Coppa Italia, one of the season’s targets. The setback stings because the trophy has been missing from the cabinet since 2003, though Allegri did not dwell on it, the schedule is tight and focus is needed.

Focus on Riyadh and the league

Corriere della Sera reviewed the defeat this morning and pushed the need to move on. The schedule forces it. Milan head to Turin on Monday to face a wounded Torino, a fixture that is traditionally one of the toughest away trips. Then a run of league games follows against Sassuolo, Verona, Cagliari, Genoa and Fiorentina. A stretch to exploit as much as possible, broken only by the trip to Riyadh for the Supercoppa. Allegri’s targets for the next month are simple, collect as many league points as possible to stay on top and try to strike again in Saudi Arabia as happened eleven months ago.

Next step

Milan need to raise the pace because the rhythm set yesterday was too slow. All energy must now go into the league and the Supercoppa, the only fixtures left on Allegri’s schedule. The goal is to avoid looking too far ahead and make the most of a calendar that, aside from the Saudi trip, has no major clashes. The next month will carry the squad toward the January window. If the team stays near the top, the board will be more open to strengthening the squad. The deal for Arizala, a 20-year-old Colombian fullback, seems close. The unresolved issue is the striker role, with Gimenez possibly staying based on the words of his father.
