Milan lose by a narrow margin against Lazio and drop out of the Coppa Italia. Despite the defeat, Max Allegri leaves the Olimpico with a positive note about Ardon Jashari, who started again after months. His last appearance from the start was on May 25 in Bruges vs Royal Antwerp.
One small touch from Zaccagni blows Milan out of the Coppa Italia, the team needed much more.
Allegri rotates a bit more than Sarri, nothing major, the Coppa Italia still matters to both so no one goes for big changes. The opening phase is slow. Pavlovic gets a correct yellow after 90 seconds following an Estupinan mistake. The first half drifts for half an hour without sparks and full of transition errors on both sides. Rabiot and Loftus are out of the game, Ricci and Jashari stay predictable. Lazio offer no threat, Milan offer none either. A scramble in the box in the 38th minute gives Milan their first and only lift of the half, yet Lazio never trouble Maignan. Leao and Castellanos fade, Saelemaekers holds back. The half ends 0-0 with no adrenaline apart from a late Maignan save from a corner.
Allegri’s side start the second half with a bit more intent, depth stays out of reach and no one gets near Mandas. Good combination between Estupinan and Loftus, the header goes over. The best chance falls again to Loftus in the 67th minute on a cross from the left by a subdued Rabiot, header wide. Milan hold the ball, territory and rhythm, then in the 70th minute Leao misses a huge chance with a left-footed shot over the bar from a strong position after a good pass from Estupinan. Sarri’s side sit and wait without ever pushing, as pointed out by Milan News.
A corner in the 80th minute breaks the match open, Zaccagni is inexplicably free and heads the ball in with no chance for Maignan, the first real sting from Lazio in the second half. Modric and Pulisic come on. Maignan stops the 2-0 on Noslin from close range, then Pulisic forces a save and wins a corner. Milan push in the final minutes without effect and their Coppa Italia run sinks at the Olimpico for the second year in a row.
