After a consultation in the Netherlands and a few days of reflection, Santiago Gimenez has decided to undergo surgery to definitively resolve the ankle problem which has troubled him for some time and kept him out over the past month and a half. His last appearance dates back to October 28 against Atalanta.

The procedure involves bone cleaning only, since ligaments and cartilage are not affected. Surgery should take place by the end of this week or, at the latest, at the start of next week. Recovery time should not be long and is expected to be around six weeks.

Possible exit in January

Gazzetta.it reports that the next step for Gimenez and his entourage will involve finding a new club for the second part of the season. The main target remains the World Cup scheduled for the summer, also hosted in Mexico. For this reason, Gimenez does not want to risk extended time on the bench at Milan, where he sits far down the pecking order and risks becoming the fifth choice. Ahead of him stand Leao, Pulisic, Nkunku and, in all likelihood, Niclas Füllkrug, the West Ham striker Milan are trying to secure on loan during these days.

World Cup target:

During the second half of the season, the Rossoneri will compete in one competition only, the league, which means matches roughly once per week. Gimenez does not want to spend more time on the bench than on the pitch, otherwise a World Cup call-up with Mexico could come under threat. For this reason, Gimenez and his entourage have already started exploring options. The ankle surgery will complicate the search, yet Santi hopes to quickly find a club willing to trust him and, above all, offer regular playing time. This was relayed via MilanNews.
