Defensive Solidity Key for AC Milan’s Great Start to Serie A Campaign: Allegri’s Magic Wearing off on Rossoneri

If you wanted evidence as to just how far the once almighty AC Milan have fallen last season, then the fact that the proud Serie A side failed to qualify for any European competition for 2025/26 would be ample. Fortunately, the move to welcome back Massimiliano Allegri into the San Siro hot seat appears to have started to pay dividends.

Last season saw AC Milan finish in eighth place, with managers Paulo Fonseca and then Sergio Conceição being axed as a result, and Rossoneri fans will not have been looking forward to the current campaign. However, experienced boss Allegri, who led AC Milan to the Serie A title run in 2010/11 as part of his previous three-and-a-half-year spell, has not only steadied the ship, but he’s steered it back to the top.

AC Milan fans who believe Allegri could well continue to work wonders at the club may want to back those aspirations with a wager. If that’s the case, this analysis and list of the best sportsbooks around will help them make the most of their betting endeavours.

Having Allegri at the helm affords the kind of stability that has been missing from AC Milan for some years, and though his style of play has, over the years, been referred to by some as overly defensive, this appears to be just what the doctor ordered for the once mighty side.

Since losing their opener at home to Cremonense, AC Milan have not looked back, going the next 14 Serie A games unbeaten to sit at the top of the tree. They have conceded just 13 goals in the league, and the likes of Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao have been deadly in the final third.

This run has seen them travel to sworn enemies Juventus and return with a point, as well as defeating the likes of Napoli and Inter, and many now see AC Milan as genuine title challengers if they continue like that.

That lack of European action, and the recent exit from Coppa Italia, could well work in their favour when the challengers like Inter and Napoli continue to tire due to UEFA Champions League commitments.

"He doesn’t ask me for many things, he just said, ‘be free’. The most important thing is focus and the right mentality. He knows what I can do with the ball and without it. He’s like a father asking his son to always do better. I feel confident because I know he counts on me," commented Leao in a recent interview.

This isn’t to say that Allegri won’t put the heat on his players, as evidenced by recent comments made about United States national team forward Pulisic.

"He still has room for improvement. In his private life, he’s very reserved, but he transforms on the pitch. He’s diabolical when he’s in front of the goal. He still needs to find his best condition."

Milan are certainly ahead of where they'd expect to be at this point of the season, and a lack of expectations may just aid their push for, at the very least, a return to top European action for 2026/2027, then who knows, perhaps if they continue to punch above their weight, and with the help of the January transfer market window, others may  fall by the wayside.
