After completing the signing of a forward, Milan now seems willing to take their time to look for a central defender to strengthen the options available to Massimiliano Allegri, who currently has four players (Tomori, Gabbia, Pavlovic, and De Winter) plus Odogu, who is used sparingly.
Milan: the defense is solid, but what about a Saelemaekers backup?
A defensive reinforcement, despite Allegri’s comments after the Cagliari match, would be very useful given the fight for the top positions, which will be tough, and having a squad with multiple players and profiles will help.
In this context, the addition of Niclas Fullkrug in attack is also excellent: Santi Gimenez’s injury will keep him out for a long time, and having a penalty-area striker, especially in certain matches, can be an extra weapon.
In Diavolo’s transfer discussions, however, another role that could benefit from a new arrival is never mentioned: the right wing. Alexis Saelemaekers is the regular starter in that area because he provides balance and unpredictability, and he has been performing very well this season, but replacing him is always tricky.
For now, Zachary Athekame, who arrived in the summer for around €10 million, does not yet seem ready. The Swiss player has had a few opportunities, but injuries and lack of confidence on the field mean he is not yet a valid alternative to the Belgian number 56, as relayed via Milan Press.
As the season continues, strong contributions from the bench will be needed, and the arrival, even on loan, of an experienced player on the right would allow Saelemaekers to rest, enabling him to continue performing well.
