Milan’s true priority for this January has been neither a striker nor a defender, but the renewal of Mike Maignan’s contract. The French goalkeeper and captain is set to expire next June, which means that from February he will be free to sign with any other club, a scenario the Rossoneri club are keen to avoid given the player’s importance.
Until a few weeks ago, Maignan staying at Milan seemed pure utopia. However, thanks to pressure from teammates, the environment, Massimiliano Allegri and the coaching staff, the goalkeeper is said to have opened up to a renewal, while setting two essential conditions: a convincing offer and guarantees of success.
A make-or-break month
Good intentions are not enough. Milan need to act in the few weeks remaining before the start of February, a crucial month for Mike Maignan’s future. Alongside a convincing financial offer, there must be concrete guarantees of a winning project. Allegri can provide those, and this season is already confirming that the foundations are positive, but the long-term outlook will be decisive. On the financial side, the proposal has been known for some time: €5.5 million per season plus €1.5 million in bonuses until 2029, figures that would make Maignan the highest-paid player in the Milan squad alongside Rafael Leao.
From inside Casa Milan there is no talk of percentages, but unlike a few weeks ago, a glimmer of light is beginning to appear, and with increasing brightness, as relayed via Milannews.it.
