Massimiliano Allegri spoke to DAZN at full time after Milan–Genoa ended 1–1. These were the Rossoneri coach’s comments following the draw, which came with a late scare at San Siro.
Are these the kind of points that make the difference at the end of the season, or is Milan maybe getting less than they deserve?
“In football, you reap what the result gives you. You have to look at the positives. Despite a difficult first half, they ran a lot and went man to man on Modric. We still had two or three good chances to score, then we conceded. In the second half it was a different situation. We raised the intensity and they dropped a bit. These are the things we need to grow into. Over the course of a season, you get matches like this where, at the 91st minute, you have four minutes to play for the win against a team that is psychologically in real trouble at that point. You need to build a couple of important situations by getting the ball close to the box, without exposing yourself to a counterattack, which nearly cost us the match. This is a lesson in maturity we need to learn. To finish in the top four, points are extremely important. You cannot think one match solves a problem, unless it is the last one. We have to improve our clarity when bringing the ball close to goal. In the last two matches we were very good at staying balanced, tonight we showed little patience after going 1–0 up. We became too rushed, and rushing gets you nowhere.”
Did you lack a sense of danger on the goal you conceded?
"Colombo did very well there, and Gabbia also slipped in that situation. We were too hurried. Matches last 100 minutes. If you do not score, you must not concede, and once you do not concede, over time the opponents drop off. You need a bit of patience."
What kind of moment is this for you? Allegri replied:
"It is an important moment, a difficult one. Every match matters and must be faced with calm. It is disappointing not to have won at home today. The team took many shots and created a lot, but in the end it was absolutely useless. In fact, we were lucky at the end because they missed the penalty. Now we will prepare for Florence, it will be a very difficult match. We more or less have everyone available, so we will try to make the right choices."
What is Leão’s issue, and how much can he still grow?
"He had two or three situations in open space where he could have done better, but he is not feeling great physically. Tonight he was decisive, like in the other matches, and in the end he scored the equaliser."
