Milan, for various reasons, decided not to pursue a defender during the winter transfer window that closed a week ago. The Rossoneri felt that, with only one competition to focus on and with Koni De Winter’s performances steadily improving, there was no urgent need to make a defensive signing just for the sake of it. Things could change this summer, even though it is still early to discuss, when a major addition in defense will almost certainly be required.

Why is a defender needed?
Today, Massimiliano Allegri’s Milan takes the field with a three-man defense that, for most of the season, has been made up of the trio Tomori-Gabbia-Pavlovic. In recent weeks, as mentioned, Koni De Winter has managed to redeem some underwhelming performances with authority, taking advantage of the forced absences of some teammates. The Belgian has now earned a starting role and the trust of his coach. The fifth option in the defensive unit is the very young David Odogu, who is still too inexperienced. Looking ahead to next year, with the hope of also having European competitions on the schedule, it will be very important to expand the squad available and, if possible, also raise its quality.
Eyes on Gila
This morning, 'Corriere dello Sport' identified the Rossoneri’s number one target as Mario Gila, the Spanish defender born in 2000 who plays for Lazio and came through Real Madrid’s youth system. In recent weeks, Milan have made initial contact with the player’s representatives. His contract runs until 2027, and he has already made it clear to the Biancoceleste club that he does not intend to renew. For this reason, Milan are planning to submit an offer in the region of €15–18 million this summer. It remains to be seen how much resistance Lazio will put up, as they would only be able to keep half of the transfer fee: Real Madrid hold a 50% sell-on clause. For now, it is just strong interest, and it remains to be seen as summer approaches whether it will develop into something more.
