AC Milan’s end of the season could serve not only to secure their immediate objectives, above all, a return to the Champions League, but also to prepare for next season in the best possible way. From Milanello, in fact, some rather interesting signals have emerged ahead of the 2026/2027 campaign: in today’s training session, Massimiliano Allegri tested a front three, with Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leão playing wide behind Santiago Giménez, who alternated in the centre-forward role with Niclas Füllkrug. A fairly clear choice that opens up the concrete possibility of seeing a 4-3-3 in this final stretch of the season, starting as early as the match against Udinese.
The 3-5-2 has provided balance, but the 4-3-3 could raise the team’s potential.
So far, Allegri has worked mainly with a 3-5-2 system, partly due to the need to restore greater defensive cover and organisation to Milan after the struggles of last season. Although that objective has been achieved, with the Rossoneri now boasting one of the best defences in the league, the team appears to have become somewhat rigid, especially in attacking output. The fact they failed to register a single shot on target against Napoli on Monday underlines this. It is a clear message, one that Allegri has taken on board to the extent that he has begun seriously working on the 4-3-3, bringing back into focus (and in a very real way) a solution that fans and observers have been calling for for some time.
More than an emergency move...
That is the key point: if Allegri decides to persist with the 4-3-3 until the end of the season, it would not simply be to change approach, but also to lay down clear and solid foundations for next season. With Leão and Pulisic out wide and a natural centre-forward, Milan could rediscover width, penalty-box presence, and more natural attacking reference points, aspects that have arguably been lacking this season.
The indications emerging today from Milanello should therefore be interpreted in this light: not as a simple experiment (or a smokescreen), but as a path that Allegri may finally be ready to commit to.
