Gazzetta: Abraham, taboo Florence and a lost goal – Gabbia reacts: “We need to talk…”

Florence surely doesn't bring him good luck. In fact, for Tammy Abraham, it’s a sort of kryptonite. He had already lost twice with Roma there, without ever finding the back of the net. Yesterday, he added a third loss, complete with the cherry on top of a missed penalty against Milan.

It was a penalty that Tammy had literally snatched from Christian Pulisic. And indeed, from the spot, the Englishman had scored his only goal since becoming a Rossonero. But at that moment—when the score was 3-0 against Venezia—the pressure of taking the kick was certainly less than at the Artemio Franchi stadium.

This time, Milan was down 1-0, and Theo had already missed a penalty at the end of the first half. Abraham, perhaps frustrated by a goal that refuses to come, insisted on taking the penalty.

Especially since it had been since April 10, 2019, that he last missed a penalty. In his career, before yesterday’s mistake, he was 17 out of 20. Not bad, but not enough to intimidate the exceptional and highly experienced former Atlético Madrid and Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea, who later also denied the Englishman a goal during open play in the 71st minute.

The bottom line is, Abraham remains goal-less once again. It’s fine that he’s a hardworking and running striker, but if he does not find the back of the net, it becomes a problem. Especially in a team that has scored only three of the 16 goals this season from strikers (two from Morata and one from Tammy).

  • The loss to Fiorentina hurts, admits Matteo Gabbia without too many words.

Gabbia: "We are not satisfied; we all feel this defeat weighing on us. We didn’t give our best; we weren’t able to maintain the consistency needed to get results on this field. We are angry, but we need to talk face to face in the locker room about why our performance was so poor.”

It’s clear that, apart from Pulisic, the attack lacked goals, while the defence has to take responsibility for the two goals conceded. Gabbia, as a center-back, focuses especially on Gudmundsson's second goal, which ultimately decided the match.

"Tomori’s mistake? We made a collective mistake; I could have been more aggressive in closing down on the shot.” A classic take to protect a teammate. But between individual and collective errors, Milan is already five points behind the league leaders, Napoli.
