Sacchi: “Allegri knows how to win in Italy. In the European stage, however…”

Arrigo Sacchi, former Rossoneri coach, spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport about Massimiliano Allegri, who is currently the hottest name for the Milan bench:

"Allegri is a coach who has perfectly followed the tracks of Italian football history, based on defense, counter-attacking, and top-level players. These are his ideas, and for these ideas, he deserves credit for having achieved important successes. But if you ask me: did his teams play well? Well, then, I must admit that I enjoy watching collective, attacking football, not individualistic and defensive football. It’s a matter of perspective."

"On the international level, no titles? No accusations, of course. My observation is that in Europe, leading the strongest and most financially powerful Italian team, that is, Juventus, he didn’t win trophies. In Italy, there’s a lack of style; teams don’t have it. The clubs focus on buying high-profile players, spending lavishly, and then in Europe, we don’t progress. That’s the problem."

Sacchi added:

"You can’t say he’s not a top-level coach, far from it. In Italy, he knows how to win, knows how to manage a group, knows how to convince players to play his type of football. My concern is different: Milan, always, has a public used to the big stages and international success. It’s the Italian club with the most European and intercontinental trophies. Allegri hasn’t won these trophies with Juventus. I hope he can do it with the Rossoneri: it would really make me happy, as I’m deeply in love with the club, and everyone knows it."
