After the last league match, the Nerazzurri coach spoke about his future in a press conference:
“Until last year, I was convinced we could raise the bar, apart from Inter, we could go toe to toe with everyone. I think we did that: Napoli finished ahead of us, maybe with a bit less bad luck — I’m referring to injuries — all the conditions were there to try to stay close. I believe the boys gave their all; 74 points is really a lot. We finished ahead of Juventus, Roma, Lazio, Fiorentina, Bologna... that’s an extraordinary achievement by everyone; we’ve been on a wonderful journey."
Gasperini added:
"After so many years, I think it will be very difficult to repeat this. I think the Champions League is something really complicated — we need to discuss exactly that. Right now, I feel like I’m no longer capable of staying at this level: now it’s time to rebuild with humility. I believe qualifying for the Champions League is a great achievement. For once in nine years, I’ll have to lower the bar — I don’t know if that will be accepted or not. Maybe over the last year, a few cracks have formed, some different views, but everything is surmountable.”
