Who will start on Sunday night in Milan’s attack against Bologna at San Siro? Max Allegri will likely carry that question with him until only a few hours before kickoff against the Emilians. The ex Juventus coach is expected to line up his team in a 3-5-2, with three players fighting for two starting spots: Christian Pulisic, Santiago Gimenez, and Christopher Nkunku. Rafael Leao is not expected to be available, as he has not fully recovered from the calf injury suffered in mid-August against Bari in the Coppa Italia, which already kept him out of the first two league matches against Cremonese and Lecce.
At the moment, all signs point to Pulisic and Gimenez as the starting pair, even though they will be the last two to return to Italy after their international duty (they are expected at Milanello only tomorrow). Both come back in high spirits: Pulisic was a key figure in the USA’s win over Japan, delivering a perfect assist for Balogun’s 2-0 goal. The Mexican striker scored a fine goal himself in the 2-2 draw between Mexico and South Korea.
What about new Milan signing Christopher Nkunku?
Despite staying at Milanello during the break and being able to train consistently at the Rossoneri’s facility, Nkunku is not yet at peak condition, since he did not play any preseason matches with Chelsea this summer. Unless there are major surprises, he is unlikely to start against Bologna. Still, the Frenchman has impressed in training in recent days (he even worked on rest days) and could prove to be an important option for Allegri during the match.
